Michael is the founder and Head Instructor of East Texas Historical Fencing, where he has been teaching Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) since 2018. Originally from East Texas, Michael began his martial arts journey in 2005, then transitioned to historical fencing in 2015. Since then, he has trained extensively across multiple weapons, with a primary focus on longsword, rapier, and sabre.
Over the years, Michael has taught more than 200 students of all experience levels and fitness, helping many develop from complete beginners into highly skilled competitors. Several of his students have gone on to become internationally ranked HEMA competitors. His teaching style emphasizes technical precision, athletic development, and practical application in a challenging but approachable training environment.
For Michael, fencing is more than studying historical techniques — it is a fast-paced, deeply competitive combat sport that blends strategy, timing, athleticism, and control in a way few modern activities can match. Whether working with new students or experienced fighters, he is passionate about making historical fencing accessible, rewarding, and engaging for everyone who steps into the salle.
Michael lives in East Texas with his wife, son, dog, and cat, and still dabbles in more weapons than he can reasonably keep track of.
